Every CRM vendor is now an "AI-powered" platform.
Every conference talk is about "the future of AI in customer engagement". Every newsletter has a take on how AI will replace your CRM manager.
I've been in CRM for 10 years. I've seen hype cycles come and go. Marketing automation, big data, personalization at scale. Some delivered. Most disappointed.
So let's be honest about what AI actually changes in CRM in 2026, and what it doesn't.
What AI is genuinely changing
Churn prediction. ML-powered churn prediction looks at hundreds of behavioral signals simultaneously. Session frequency, feature adoption patterns, support ticket sentiment, billing behavior. It produces a churn probability score that updates in real time.
Your win-back campaigns stop being sent to users who were going to stay anyway, and start reaching the users who were genuinely about to leave. Efficiency goes up. CAC goes down.
Send time optimization. AI-powered STO determines the optimal send time for each individual user based on their actual behavior history. A 10 to 20% improvement in open rates from STO alone is consistent across the platforms I've worked with.
Content personalization at scale. Generative AI makes it genuinely feasible to produce personalized email content at scale. Braze, Klaviyo, and Salesforce Marketing Cloud all have native AI content generation now.
What AI is NOT changing (yet)
The strategy. AI doesn't tell you what lifecycle stages matter for your product. The strategic layer, understanding your users, mapping their journey, defining the interventions that matter, still requires human judgment. AI executes strategy. It doesn't create it.
The data quality problem. AI is only as good as the data it's trained on.
Garbage in, garbage out. The most common reason AI CRM features disappoint is not the AI. It's the data infrastructure underneath.
The relationship. Users don't build loyalty with algorithms. They build loyalty with experiences that feel genuinely understood. AI can identify the moment to intervene. It can't replace the quality of that intervention.
The honest take on AI CRM tools in 2026
Braze's Sage AI, Klaviyo's predictive analytics, Salesforce Einstein. Genuinely useful. Not transformative, but useful.
The teams getting real value share a common profile. Clean data, a clear lifecycle strategy, and a CRM manager who knows how to interpret outputs rather than blindly trust them.
The teams getting burned are those who bought the AI pitch before solving the fundamentals.
What to do right now
Audit your data instrumentation first. Are your key product events tracked consistently? If not, fix that before anything else.
Define your lifecycle stages manually. AI can optimize timing. It can't tell you what messages to send and why.
Pick one AI feature to test. STO is the easiest win. Start there, measure, then expand.
Conclusion
AI is making good CRM better. It's not making bad CRM good.
The fundamentals haven't changed. Understand your users, define their journey, intervene at the right moments. AI helps you do that faster and at greater scale. But only if the foundation is solid.
